All these things are good advice for a son as well as a daughter.

I had to check and yes, it’s from Texas! I don’t think that girls in California public schools ever think they can be “ruined by an act.” (On the theme of being ruined by that act and experiencing 1000 pages of guilt, see the Nobel Prize-winning novel Kristin Lavransdatter — written in the 1920s and set in the 12th century). I sincerely hope that my two high-school daughters know most of the things in this article, but some I will share, especially sex being like gymnastics!

But did you notice what was missing? The one about birth control. Unless I am not seeing it. We certainly told our more boy-interested daughter, when she was about 15, “DO NOT have sex until you’ve done something about birth control. Boys your age are not to be trusted. YOU need to be on the pill. So YOU need to plan when this is going to happen, and not just let some cute boy decide for you.” This seems like about THE most obvious thing a teen-aged girl should know about sex. All this guy seems to say is “you should be aware that sex can result in pregnancy.” Duh! Is that all you’re allowed to publish in Texas?

Excellent advice. I told my kids “Never go to bed with someone you don’t want to wake up next to” and “If you can’t talk about what you’re planning to do with the person you’re planning to do it with, you aren’t ready yet.” I think it served them well.
I like to think they already knew there was nothing they could do that would make me quit loving them.

Elizabeth Smart has been giving talks about why the purity movement is seriously damaging, that it causes extra harm to rape victims, that it keeps kidnapped and/or abused girls from escaping…

She thinks she might have been able to get away from her captors a couple months earlier if not for the purity-obsessive psychological conditioning she’d been subjected to for her whole life.

The idea is basically that you, as a father, are supposed to serve as the sole male influence in your daughter’s life until she gets married.

As a 39 year-old male who (apparently unlike everyone else his age) remembers his teenage years very well, I can’t begin to imagine a more effective recipe for turning one’s daughter into a highly promiscuous boy-chaser.

re: #5 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

And consider the hypothetical reverse:

The idea is basically that you, as a mother, are supposed to serve as the sole female influence in your son’s life until he gets married.
